คุณยายชาวจีนวัย 102 ปี ถูกส่งเข้ารับการรักษาภายในโรงพยาบาลในเครือมหาวิทยาลัยการแพทย์ฮาร์บิน มณฑลเฮย์หลงเจียง ประเทศจีน และจำเป็นต้องผ่าตัด แต่ด้วยสภาพร่างกายที่อ่อนแอจึงไม่สามารถดมยาสลบได้ เนื่องจากเกรงว่าจะมีผลข้างเคียง

คุณยายเต็มไปด้วยความหวาดกลัวเมื่อต้องเข้ารับการผ่าตัด อีกทั้งยังไม่สามารถดทยาชาได้ ดังนั้น 'ดร.จ้าว เหลียง' ศัลยแพทย์ผู้ทำการรักษาจึงตัดสินใจตรงเข้าหาคุณยายซึ่งนั่งอยู่บนเตียงคนไข้ และโอบกอดอย่างอ่อนโยน เพื่อช่วยผ่อนคลายจากความรู้สึกกังวล

'ดร.จ้าว เหลียง' ประคองกอดคุณยายพร้อมพูดปลอบประโลม เป็นเวลานานกว่า 20 นาที จนกระทั่งแน่ใจว่ามีท่าทีผ่อนคลาย จึงตัดสินใจดำเนินการผ่าตัดและสำเร็จด้วยดี

The 102-year-old woman, born in 1914, had fallen down and fractured her bones. She needed surgery, but could not be asked to lie on her side for general anaesthesia because of her old age. Dong Yingwei, the experienced anaesthesiologist from the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University, then went against convention and suggested that the local anaesthesia be administered with her sitting up - a procedure that is not generally taught in textbooks. But the tricky procedure also required the frail woman to sit very still, so doctor Zhao Liang offered to hold her steady. He also comforted the patient from Harbin, capital of north-eastern Chinaís Heilongjiang Province, who was nervous and constantly asked for a carer. As nonmedical staff are not allowed in operation rooms, Zhao also played the role of comforter, reassuring the pensioner that he was there for her. Amazingly, the unorthodox procedure, which reportedly fascinated the med students watching from the gallery, required the doctor to hold the woman steady for more than 20 minutes. The doctor said:$
